Until recently, for the last 7 years, I was employed 30 hours a week as a high end carpenter, in addition to painting and teaching.
I got laid off in april, with no notice. Now, that’s several thousand dollars a month I miss sorely, but I’m happier because I’m teaching more, traveling more, and painting more. My life is focused on my work and getting back to teaching, now, exactly where I want it to be. I’m able to focus.
And I have lots of exciting shows and workshops coming up. In order to stay flexible and available, for residencies, and to travel for workshops, i’m looking for some bread and butter.
In the last couple years I have done a number of private commissions and have really enjoyed the process, there’s something very special about making a painting just for someone in particular, something devotional, almost, in knowing it has a home before it’s begun. It’s nice to know, occasionally, that you are getting paid.
I’m taking a limited number commissions for smaller, affordable works, to keep the lights on and the wolves at bay while i travel this summer:
small works on paper, 9x12 and under, $500 and less, unframed.
works on panel or canvas: 20x20 and under: $2k or under, unframed.
Of course, larger commissions are always open to discussion as well, on an ongoing basis.
